HOW MUCH ARE LESSONS?

Please note: Each lesson requires a minimum of 4 people and can accommodate a maximum of 12.

Mahjong 101 (required) | $75 per person; 2-2.5 hours

Mahjong 101 is the starting point for both the “mahjong curious" and for those who know they want to learn the game; we’ll go over the tiles, rules, and start to play.

In this session, you’ll:

  • Learn the 152 tiles

  • Learn how to read the National Mah Jongg League card

  • Start learning how to form hands

  • Go over the rules of the Charleston and begin playing a game

Mahjong 102 (strongly recommended) | $60 per person; 2 hours

If you and your group are serious about continuing to play the game, this session is essential!

In this session, you’ll:

  • Review what we covered during Mahjong 101

  • Reinforce the Charleston pass sequence

  • Continue learning how to form hands

  • Play at least one game

  • Begin learning strategies around the Charleston and game play

Mahjong 103 | $50 per person; 2 hours

If you’ve completed Mahjong 101 and Mahjong 102, consider another session or two of assisted play to build on the rules and strategies. Mahjong is all about practice—the more games you play, the more hands you’ll encounter. Many beginners find it helpful to have this additional coached play and will book 1-2 extra coaching sessions depending on their group’s interest.

In this session, you’ll:

  • Receive coached game play of as many games as time permits–ask all the questions!

  • Learn more about strategic play

New Card Session: bookable starting in April | $50 per person; 1.5 hours

The National Mah Jongg league will release their new annual card on April 1. Only a few of the 50+ hands will be the same as the previous year’s card.

In this session, you’ll:

  • Review the new hands

  • Receive coached gameplay with the new card

  • Ask any questions you and your group have encountered during regular play

WHERE ARE LESSONS HELD?

Private lessons are available to be scheduled within a 30 mile radius of Hartford, CT, at a location of your choosing—this is typically a home (or office if the class is offered through work) or a space within a library, rec center, or country club. Please plan to enter the location (town included) when registering.

CAN I BOOK FOR A BIRTHDAY PARTY, BABY SHOWER, OR SIMILAR EVENT?

Yes, a mahjong lesson is the perfect activity for a small group gathering! Please reach out to hello@meetmeformahjong.com so we can recommend the best way to structure a lesson for your event.

WHAT IS INCLUDED WITH EACH LESSON?

All materials for the lessons will be provided, including tile sets, a playing guide, and National Mah Jongg League cards for you to use during lessons. We’ll touch base on your table and seating setup before your lesson(s) to make sure the setup works for the headcount, but please note that square game tables or smaller circular dining tables are necessary for Mahjong 102 and beyond. We’re happy to provide up to three card tables (each of which accommodate four people) for $6/table if you'd prefer. Feel free to have snacks and drinks set up for your group!

IS THERE A WAY TO JOIN A SESSION AS AN INDIVIDUAL, IF I DON’T CURRENTLY HAVE A GROUP OF FOUR?

At this time all sessions booked directly require a minimum of four people (and a maximum of 12); stay tuned for more individual opportunities in the future! You can also email hello@meetmeformahjong.com and we’ll make sure you’re in the loop for individual play as we plan future events.

WHERE DO I PURCHASE A CARD AND TILES FOR FUTURE USE?

Once your group continues to play on your own, each person will need a card and you’ll need one tile set for every four people playing. We’ll provide cards to be using during the lessons, so you won’t need to purchase one ahead of time. The National Mah Jongg League sells the 2025 card, and the 2026 card is available for pre-order (it will begin arriving in April).

Tiles sets are available through a number of online retailers, and some local stores near you may carry them as well. Stay tuned for a page of our favorites! Make sure you’re buying “American mahjong tiles” since the Chinese sets are different.

DO YOU PARTNER WITH PROFESSIONAL AND SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS?

Yes! We offer sessions to offices and organizations – please reach out to hello@meetmeformahjong.com with your inquiry.
